The Cello
The cello is an orchestral stringed instrument, a member of the violin family. It is much larger than a violin, and is played upright while the player is seated. It rests on an end pin on the floor. The cello is played by drawing a bow horizontally across the strings of the instrument, creating a mellow, expressive sound. The cello has four strings tuned in fifths, and these strings are tuned one octave below the viola. Depending on their age and size, school orchestra students generally play a cello that is 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 or 4/4 size. To size a student for a cello, they should be seated on a chair, knees at a 90 degree angle, and see if they can comfortably reach around the bulk of the instrument. The C tuning peg (the lowest string) should be level with the left ear.
